Wayne Thomas Scholarship

Wayne Thomas was a beloved and highly respected figure in the McLaren Vale wine community, celebrated for his expertise and warm spirit. His innovative winemaking journey began in the 1960s, and he remained a forward-thinking force in the industry, always producing exceptional wines. Wayne's accolades, such as winning the prestigious Bushing Monarch trophy for his 2005 Shiraz and 2003 Petit Verdot, underscored his skill and dedication. A cherished mentor to many young winemakers, he was known for his unique charm, positivity, and unwavering commitment to crafting beautiful wines that represented the best of McLaren Vale.


ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Wayne Thomas Scholarship aims to continue the legacy of Wayne's dedication to the community of the McLaren Vale wine region and his mentorship of the region's young winemakers. The Scholarship aims to foster judging talent from McLaren Vale, and the successful applicant will receive:

The scholarship is designed for staff of all Association Members, including (but not limited to) cellar door staff, winemakers, viticulturists and marketing personnel.

Patrick Gilhooly, Thistledown Wines

In conjunction with the McLaren Vale Wine Show Chair of Judges Andrew Thomas, the McLaren Vale Grape Wine & Tourism Association is pleased to announce Patrick Gilhooly from Thistledown Wines as the 2024 recipient of the Wayne Thomas Scholarship.

The volume and calibre of applications this year was exceptional, and the diversity of applicants spanned the full spectrum of McLaren Vale's grape, wine and tourism sectors. The combined experience of all applicants highlighted decades of tasting experience and global qualifications from our region's leading winemakers and tasting room managers.
